HIGH SCHOOL

Dennis Redmond, Jr., Jordan Basketball

Dennis Redmond, Jr. helped lead the Jordan basketball team to its first CIF Southern Section championship since 1996 with an outstanding two-way effort on Saturday. Redmond Jr. had 23 points to lead the Panthers in scoring.

Kane Young, Jordan Basketball

Jordan’s Kane Young has turned in excellent performances on both ends of the court this year, and he did the same thing in the CIF-SS championship last Saturday. Young was a lockdown defender and also put up 17 points to bring the gold plaque home to the Northside.

COLLEGE

Ma’Qhi Berry, Long Beach State Basketball 

Ma’Qhi Berry had a phenomenal weekend as she led Long Beach State to their 13th and 14th consecutive victories as she averaged 22.0 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game to go along with nine assists, four steals and one block. The Beach are two wins away from the Big West title.

Alex Champagne, Long Beach State Baseball

The Champagne was flowing at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field, as Alex Champagne led Long Beach State to an 11-5 win over Seattle U. Champagne went 4-for-5 at the plate in the victory over the visitors.

Mike Guardabascio
An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
