HIGH SCHOOL

Xai Ricks, Track & Field

Long Beach Poly junior Xai Ricks won the 600 meter championship at the California Winter Classic last weekend with a blazing time of 1:16.13. That’s a meet record and also the fastest time ever run over 600 meters by a 16-year old American.

Gavin Laverde, Millikan Wrestling

Millikan’s Gavin Laverde stole the show at the Moore League boys’ wrestling finals, winning his weight class for the fourth straight year as the Rams claimed 8 of the 14 individual titles.

Maya O’dea, Wilson Water Polo

Wilson senior Maya O’dea put on a special performance on senior night. She ended the night with a game high five goals, beating Millikan and claiming another Moore League championship for the Bruins..

Lucca Pires, Wilson Soccer

Wilson had a remarkable surge at the end of the season to claim fourth place in the Moore League and the league’s final playoff spot. It wouldn’t have happened without a two-goal performance against Poly by Lucca Pires last week, giving his team a 2-1 win.

COLLEGE

Ma’Qhi Berry, Long Beach State Basketball

Ma’Qhi Berry averaged 11.5 points last week on her way to becoming the 27th player in LBSU women’s basketball history to record 1,000 career points. Additionally, Berry’s efforts helped the Beach extend their winning streak to eight games and move into first place in The Big West Standings.
