Four Long Beach teams took the court on Tuesday in the first round of the CIF State basketball championships. Here’s a look at how each team fared, with links to our coverage from the games:
Boys’ Basketball
Division I
St. Anthony 64, Torrey Pines 52
The Saints made the drive south and knocked off the No. 6 seed in the bracket. St. Anthony fell behind 18-12 after the first quarter but battled back to lead 32-27 at halftime, then 51-39 after three quarters. From there, the Saints held on to win by a dozen. They’ll travel to face No. 3 seed Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Thursday in round two.
St. Bernard 52, Long Beach Poly 40
Poly got a tough draw in round one against the No. 4 seed in the bracket and certainly held their own. The Jackrabbits led 11-4 after eight minutes and held a 16-13 halftime lead in a defensive slugfest. The teams then went into the final quarter tied, 31-31, but St. Bernard pulled away on their home floor to end Poly’s season.
