Football: Jordan’s Damian Henderson Gets Arizona, Colorado State Scholarship Offers

Jordan football star Damian Henderson got the news he’s been waiting on his entire life last week—the junior running back received his first scholarship offer from the University of Arizona, an offer that was quickly followed by another, from Colorado State.

“I didn’t know what to do, I was just so surprised and so happy, like wow somebody really offered me,” said Henderson. “I’ve worked so hard but I hadn’t gotten that recognition yet so it really meant a lot to me.”

Henderson is a two-sport standout in football and basketball, and is trying to be the first Division 1-signed Panthers football player since John Ross, who’s currently an NFL player. Henderson’s standout performances on the gridiron and on the court have meant a lot to Jordan, which has seen its sports programs going through a resurgence over the last year.

“I was so happy he got that offer, because that kid has been through so much, he’s such a good kid and he really deserved the opportunity,” said Jordan football coach Tim Wedlow. “Everyone on our campus is rooting for Damian, and he understands that the offer means he needs to work extra hard in the classroom and to take care of business.”

The adversity Henderson has overcome off the field, and his positive attitude in spite of those circumstances is a big part of why the Jordan campus has been drawn to him.

“There’s an entire village around that kid to make sure that he makes the most of his opportunities,” said Jordan basketball coach Chris Francis.

Henderson said that Arizona and Colorado State have both offered him a scholarship to play running back.
