This will be a season of change for the Long Beach State Dirtbags baseball program no matter what results they find on the field. New coach Eric Valenzuela is rebuilding the roster and changing the approach after taking over in the summer. He turned around the St. Mary’s program with his energy and modern approach, so Dirtbags fans can look forward to more of that at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field this year. Valenzuela also doesn’t mince his words when it comes to the important things like recruiting.
“It’s going to take some time. Obviously we’re going to go out and recruit our butts off right now to get the best possible players we can that are going to fit the mold and culture we’re going to bring to the table. Growing up in Southern California, coaching in San Diego for 10 years, then the last six at St. Mary’s, I feel like I understand (California) and how much talent is really here. At Long Beach State you can get the best players in the country, and compete against anyone in California and the West Coast.”
