Wilson Bruins wrestling had a solid showing last season with four boys league champions plus a CIF State qualifier on the girls side in Gracie Kirazian.
“Both of our teams were definitely young last season,” Wilson coach Seth Wetter said. “This year I look forward to seeing both of our programs build on that foundation of excellence.”
Senior Andrew Rendon leads the way for the Bruins. The team captain is a defending league champion and was a medalist at the CIF meet.
Rendon (132), Ryan Catbagan (106) and Brett Dowgiewicz (195) are all defending league champions. Dowgiewicz also went on to medal at CIF. Junior Griffin Hunt is also serving as team captain.
Junior Gracie Kirazian and senior Mandy DeSilva are team captains for the girls, and Wegter said that freshmen Evany Mesina and Vivianna Vega are coming on strong. They both did very well at the Capo Valley Big Kat Tournament last month as Vega took second and Mesina took third.
“This year we have over 90 wrestlers in our program so there are a lot of really talented newcomers,” Wegter said. “A successful season for us is seeing all of our athletes reach their potential.”
