The Millikan Rams are starting a new era under first-year coach Tan Nguyen. The walk-on coach has been working as a volunteer assistant at Cal Poly Pomona for the last two years, and this is his first high school coaching job.
“It’s a solid program with a great group of kids who want to come in and work hard,” Nguyen said of Millikan. “It’s definitely a work in progress but we’re getting better every day. We don’t have one particular standout so it’s going to have to be a balanced attack.”
Nguyen said that he’s going on seniors Julia Campbell, Kelli McCombs, Sydney Robertson Roxann Root and Mina Barajas for leadership while he tries to work out the best lineup available. Campbell and Barajas were voted team captains by their teammates.
“We’re going to experiment with multiple lineups throughout the preseason so we can iron out where everyone is going to play,” Nguyen said. “My philosophy is to get them comfortable in multiple positions. We’re going to have to be a little bit scrappier and nontraditional.”
