The Long Beach City College baseball season came to a close last weekend as the Vikings were eliminated from the Southern California Super Regionals by No. 1 Orange Coast College in two games.
On Thursday, May 9, Orange Coast scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a tie and win 9-6. Travis Aversa, Zach Rivas, David Balboa, Robert Barham and Chris Rubottom all had two hits in the game. Barham had a pair of RBIs. Sophomores Aversa and Raul Gonzalez led the Vikings with 57 and 60 hits this year, respectively.
On Friday, LBCC starting pitcher Garrett Rennie only gave up two runs in eight innings while striking out five, but the Vikings could only muster eight hits, seven singles, in a 2-0 loss.
This season was a huge turnaround for conference champion LBCC (28-17) after starting 2-7 and struggling to produce offensively. The Vikings say they’re excited about the young talent it will bring back next season.
