The most underrated sports dynasty in Long Beach is bringing home another trophy, after Long Beach State’s women’s tennis team won a thrilling Big West championship over Hawaii, 4-3.
It’s the 12th conference title in 15 years for Long Beach State, who trailed 3-1 but rallied to win the final three matches of the day, including a thriller at No. 2 singles with Emma Bardet winning 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 to clinch the title.
Long Beach State has won 15 total conference championships, all under head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. With the win, Long Beach State is headed back to the NCAA Tournament.
The best news from the weekend for Long Beach State fans is that all six of the team’s singles players in the championship are underclassmen, including three freshmen. Both No. 1 and No. 2 singles players (Wiktoria Rutkowska and Bardet) are freshmen.
