St. Anthony boys’ basketball coach Allen Caveness knew that Wednesday was going to be an emotional evening, as his Saints’ Senior Night festivities recognized five players who’ve been foundational to his program’s success. “It got a little emotional, but I fought off the tears,” he said of watching them walk the court to take photos with their families.
The Saints quickly got down to business against Cantwell Sacred Heart and won easily, 100-33.
“I’m just proud of the guys, the ones who’ve been here all four years but the transfers as well, we’ve all gone through the journey together,” said Caveness.
Three of the Saints’ seniors are four-year varsity standouts, as Frank Staine, Marquise Nelloms and Josh Belvin all arrived when the school was a lower division program and have helped build it to where it is today, like a top 10 team in the Division 1 playoffs when the brackets are released this weekend.
“We’ve been talking about it all week,” said Staine. “The three of us were sitting together before the game just talking about how crazy it is, how far we’ve come.”
Senior Miles Dickerson led the Saints with 19 points, backed up by 16 from Dedrick Allen and 11 from Staine.
The CIF-SS brackets will be released at noon on Sunday, we’ll be tweeting them out live @562sports.
