St. Anthony has been hiring coaches that the school feels can take their sports programs over the top, and they may have found their man on the pitch in new boys’ soccer coach Matt Dold, who inherits last year’s 10-11-1 team, which did win a Santa Fe League title.
Dold is a well-connected local coach who’s been coaching youth soccer with the Beach FC club, and serves as an assistant coach on Cerritos College’s men’s team, which just won a state and national championship. Dold’s Saints squad has started the year 4-1-0, and also has championship expectations.
Leading the way will be a pair of talented seniors in Evan Vance and Christian Fernandez. Vance currently leads the team with four goals and is verbally committed to Hawaii Hilo. Fernandez should end up playing at the next level as well.
Junior Will McGee is the defensive centerpiece for a Saints team that has given up just three goals this year, while scoring 16.
“He’s the anchor in the back for us and a natural-born leader,” Dold said of McGee.
