Long Beach City College Update: Women’s Volleyball Starts Postseason

The Long Beach City College women’s volleyball team hosts Grossmont College in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regional Playoffs tonight at 6 p.m. in the Hall of Champions.

LBCC (21-3) won the South Coach Conference South division and is currently ranked No. 6 in the state. Grossmont (21-5) is ranked No. 13.

Freshman outside hitter Tylie Johnson ranked second in the conference with 3.79 kills per set for the Vikings. Freshman setter Levila Iosua led the conference with 9.07 assists per set.

The winner will move forward to the second round on Saturday, Nov. 24.

Women’s Basketball

LBCC (1-2) held on to win its home opener last Friday 54-51 over Antelope Valley in dramatic fashion.

The visiting Marauders tied the game with 20 seconds left in regulation, but freshman Jasmeemah Martinez and sophomore Naomi Winston-Ellis got to the free throw line to give LBCC the lead for good.

Martinez scored a team-high 11 points while sophomore  De’Brianna Hampton led the Vikings with nine rebounds and three assists. LBCC will be at the Ventura College Kiwanis Tournament this weekend.

Men’s Basketball

After starting the season on a five-game winning streak, LBCC (5-1) lost its first game at the Irvine Valley Classic on Saturday against Cerritos 89-64. Freshman Jace Bass leads the Vikings with 18.3 points and 4.3 assists per game, and sophomore Matthew Wooten has team-highs with 7.2 rebounds and 1.3 blocks. LBCC will be at the West LA Tournament next week.

Women’s Soccer

Six Vikings were honored by the South Coast Conference last week with All-SCC South Division awards. Freshman forward Brittany Caudillo, freshman forward Quinn Trowbridge and freshman defender Cassandra Hodge were named first-team, while freshman defender Leah Rouse, freshman midfielder Yesenia Hernandez and sophomore midfielder Madison Slade all made the second-team.

Men’s Soccer

The men’s team also had six players honored by the SCC last week after losing in the first round of the SoCal regional playoffs. Sophomore midfielder Ruben Menjivar, sophomore forward Carlos Maldonado, sophomore defender Adrian Martinez were named first-team, while freshman defender Javier Gonzalez, freshman defender Jaelyn Agu and freshman midfielder Sergio Flores all earned second-team honors. Maldonado led the SCC with 15 assists, and was third in conference with nine goals.
