The Long Beach State women’s soccer team continued its historic season with a 2-0 win over UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Tournament to claim their second trophy in as many weeks, and secure the program’s seventh-ever NCAA Tournament bid.
Ashley Gonzales had the game-winning score in the 26th minute on a free kick after drawing the foul at the top of the box.
“I saw it was open and I told my teammates, ‘I got this,’” said Gonzales.
It was the 36th goal of her career, extending her program record. It was also the redshirt senior’s fourth time in the Big West Tournament final after sitting out last year with a knee injury.
“We’re lucky she’s on our team,” said Long Beach State coach Mauricio Ingrassia. “For her to get the goal was perfect.”
LBSU midfielder Dana Fujikuni was awarded Tournament MVP. She had the team’s second goal in the 56th minute.
