Going into Wednesday afternoon’s CIF Southern Section Division 3 wild card game against Sage Hill, Long Beach Poly hadn’t won a postseason game since 2006. Plenty of NCAA Division 1 talent has come through the program since that ’06 win over Servite, but has come up empty in the playoffs.
Wednesday the Jackrabbits flipped the script with a comeback win over Sage Hill, 6-4. Poly now advances to a Friday first-round game on the road against Fullerton High.
The Jackrabbits trailed 4-1 in the fifth inning but rallied back, tying the game on a sacrifice by Mike Mauai and a two-RBI double by EJ Andrews. Andrews, a Fresno State signee, also started the game on the mound and yielded two earned runs in four innings.
Jesse Simon picked up the win out of the bullpen for the Jackrabbits.
