Long Beach State Track & Field Seven Top Finishes

Long Beach State concluded competition at the Spring Track Classic at UC Riverside with seven Top 3 finishers in Saturday’s field events. Junior Bria Palmer was the lone event winner for the Beach, taking the top spot in the women’s high jump for the third time in as many tries this season.

The women’s high jump was one of LBSU’s best events of the day, with the Beach having the top two finishers while also boasting four of the best six jumpers. Palmer was victorious at 5-07, with Meg Sweeney matching her PR in second by clearing 5-05. Delaney Smith and Diana Acholonu each cleared 5-03 to take fifth and sixth, respectively, as Smith picked up a personal best in the event.

In the women’s pole vault, Lauren Bartsch placed third by clearing 12-00. Hailee Brigman matched her lifetime best in the event at 11-06.25 to take ninth. Crystal Rodriguez had one of her two PR’s on Saturday in the women’s discus, finishing third with a heave of 152-04 to beat her previous best by over 12 feet. Rodriguez also had a PR in the women’s javelin throw, recording a mark of 129-04 to take sixth. Brianna Uipi posted a PR in the discus, posting a 141-03. Also in women’s field action, freshmen Erin McGuire and Deja Dames had personal bests in the long jump with marks of 17-08.25 and 16-07, respectively.

The men’s pole vault was also strong for Long Beach State with athletes finishing second, third, and fourth. Michael Magula was in second place thanks to his 15-11, setting a new season best by four inches. Dustin Wert took third at 14-11 and Luis Briceno was fourth, clearing 14-05.25. Josh Carr took third in the men’s discus with a throw of 167-09, and Ryan Coy posted a PR at 142-06. Coy also had a PR of 171-06 in the men’s javelin, finishing just behind teammate Jeffrey Pulcher in sixth with a mark of 172-08.

It was a limited day on the track for the Beach, but freshman McGuire and Dames each posted PR’s in separate events. McGuire ran a personal best of 14.88 in the 110-meter hurdles to place 11th while Dames posted a PR of 13.10 in the women’s 100-meter dash.

Next up on the schedule for the Beach is the Mondo Team Challenge in Sacramento next Saturday.
